Error 18456" error message when you specify configuration database

I appreciate if some one please help me to solve the following problem
SYMPTOMS
I am runnning the Setup program to install Microsoft Windows SharePoint
Services. After the Setup program is completed successfully, I configure
Windows SharePoint Services settings in SharePoint Central Administration. I
then specify configuration database settings on the Set Configuration
Database Server page of SharePoint Central Administration, and then I click
OK. Then, I receive one of the following error messages:
"Error 18456" error message when you specify configuration database settings
on the Set Configuration Database Server page of SharePoint Central
Administrator"
I have gone through the article on
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=889646&FR=1 but it does not help me out.
Please let me know if some one came across this problem & i could solve it

the option "user windows authentication" so i dont know which account its
going to use here to create the database.

error in the SQL Error log (Open SQL Enterprise Manager and connect to the
SQL Server instance in question and navigate to Management>SQL Server Logs)

SERVICE, but even this i didn't find in SQL server logs as you have
mentioned. If i have to check for correct password then where? because i am
not providing here any password during "set configuration database server". I
am selecting the following options which is mandatory as per installation
guide for MS project 2003 server.
1. Database server = "i give sql server name"
2. SQL server database name = "database name as sharepointdb"
3. selected the option "use windows authentication
4. then last option " users already have domain accounts. Do not creat
active directory accounts.
I dont see any NT AUTHORITY account in active directory to give permission
for database create or to see for its password, please let me know

Error 17 SQL SERVER

Cannot enable TCP/IP on SQL Server 2000 when switching to a new server.

for support on this one. Old DMZ was aliased in code using a name that was
different from the actual server name. Once the actual server name was used
as an alias the TCP/IP worked fine. To enable the alias, a second server
needed to be setup using an ole db alias.

Error 15123

When trying to use the generate SQL Wizard, I get an error

This just started happening this week. Does anyone have any ideas?

That error normally pops up when you're trying to use the xp_cmdshell function, but it doesn't seem like you're doing that. |||It's possible. Sometimes I try to move the error around or force it, so one strategy might be to back up the DB and restore it on the same or another server. Alternately, you could use the database copy wizard to copy to a new DB and see if the problem forces itself out somewhere.|||The error happens on all databases, so I did detach one of the dbs and copy it to another server. The problem did not follow the db. I figure, we get through this one project and then rebuild the box.|||

Wow - very odd. I wonder if it's a file-locking issue at the OS. In any caes, I'm glad that worked for you. Let me know if I can help in any way.

If I stop Reporting Services service, restarts the IIS and starts the Reporting Services service again I get following error.

(This behaviour is repeatable.)

It's possible that I have edit (no change!) the ASP.NET tab under properties for the ReportServer website in IIS 6. Why? Some of my first actions after discovering that the installation didn't work was to look in the IIS 6 MMC...

Any suggestions?

The only way we could fix the problem was to uninstall SQL Server and reinstall it.

We tried everything we could think of but it still didn't help. Now we know not to touch those settings!

After hours of thinking, testing, googleing and head scratching I found a workaround.
I tried to change the Reporting Services application pool identity to a windows account. And it worked. This window account is a member of local administrators. Haven't tried more restricted rights yet.
But documentation from Microsoft recommends to use Network Service as application pool identity for Reporting Services.

I found this url interesting, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861/.
But I tried both workaround descibed whitout success.

Any idea? Anyone?
I really would like to use the Network Service account as recommended by Microsoft.

If I stop Reporting Services service, restarts the IIS and starts the Reporting Services service again I get following error.

The event source "Report Server" does not exist. (rsEventLogSourceNotFound)

After some minute I refresh the browser and now I get rsInternalError again.

(This behaviour is repeatable.)

It's possible that I have edit (no change!) the ASP.NET tab under properties for the ReportServer website in IIS 6. Why? Some of my first actions after discovering that the installation didn't work was to look in the IIS 6 MMC...

Any suggestions?

The only way we could fix the problem was to uninstall SQL Server and reinstall it.

We tried everything we could think of but it still didn't help. Now we know not to touch those settings!

After hours of thinking, testing, googleing and head scratching I found a workaround.
I tried to change the Reporting Services application pool identity to a windows account. And it worked. This window account is a member of local administrators. Haven't tried more restricted rights yet.
But documentation from Microsoft recommends to use Network Service as application pool identity for Reporting Services.

I found this url interesting, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861/.
But I tried both workaround descibed whitout success.

Any idea? Anyone?
I really would like to use the Network Service account as recommended by Microsoft.

I have installed Reporting Services 2005 64bit Enterprise Edition on WIN 2003
64bit SP1 Enterprise Edition.
Reporting Services Configuration Manager indicate that everything is ok,
green checks except Encryption Keys and Execution Account.
Reporting Services databases, ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB, is not
"installed" at the same server. Tha DB's runs at a SQL 2005 Server 64bit in
the same domain.

Erroneous error in Reporting Services Configuration Manager (2005)

I'm attempting to setup reporting services 2005 on a system that has never
had reporting services installed and has a previous SQL 2000 (sp4) instance.
This server is running Windows 2000 SP4.
In the Reporting Services Configuration Manager I have successfully have
completed (check marks) the following steps "Server Status, Report Server
Virtual Directory, Report Manager Virtual Directory, Windows Service
Identity, Email Settings".
My problem is when I attempt to perform the database connection step. I
click connect and type in my computer name and leave in windows
authenticaiton. I am then able to browse the drop down list of my SQL 2000
databases. I then click new, leave the defaults and say OK. It successfully
creates a ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB. I click Apply, however, and
get the following error:
There was a failure applying your change. A virtual directory must first be
created before performing this operation.
I already created both of the virtual directory steps with no issue. I even
went into IIS and see the directories have been created by the Configuration
Manager. Any suggestions?

is being filled up with .NET Runtime Optimization Service entries. I even
