ERROR 18456 not being logged in event viewer

Hi.
I made an alert that will email me whenever someone causes error 18456 to be
raised... My thinking behind this is that if anyones trying to access my
server and FAILS, then they are probably up to no good.
So anyway... This alert was created... I verified that SQL Server Agent
Mail is running, as is SQL Mail... so thats not the point of failure.
I just attempted to log in with sa and a fake password. It predictably did
not give me access to the databases, but the event was NOT logged to the
application log. I checked in enterprise manager, and the checkbox that
says "Always write to Windows eventlog" is checked.
I also verified that the SQL Server Agent is running under a local and
domain admin, and this is the case.
Does anybody have any ideas?

I assume that this error number is failed login. If so, you handle this in a special way. EM, right-click your
server, security.

|||Are you referring to the "Audit Level" raido buttons?
Changing it from "None" to "Failure" didnt seem to make that much of a
difference. Am I looking at the right thing?

I have a user that her domain user account is failing to access a sql server
database while another persons domain account with the same permission to th

database works just fine. I remote into the workstation and test the odbc
connection with my user account and it worked just fine. Any help.

This should be a straight-forward error that means: bhcs/connie has no right
to login on the server.
Check to be sure: the login is the proper one (not one spelled almost the
same), that connie was not denied login, etc.

Error 18456 - Connecting via DSN

Hi,
My MS Access application needs to connect to a SQL server via a system
dsn. However, I keep getting the error 18456 - Login failed for user 'xxxx'.
The surprising bit is I am able to use the same password and user id and
connect to the server using Enterprise Manager. Any ideas on why the dsn is
throwing this error? Connection is via SQL authentication.
Any help would be much appreciated.

|||Yeah, I was able to resolve the issue by updating the links in Access. Right
click on the link table, select Link Table Manager, select, promt for new
location,a nd on ok, select the DSN again...

Hi,

I have a stored procedure servicing a queue (sql 2005).

The stored procedure updates some data in a different server and database.

If the queue contains messages and I execute manually the stored procedure, I don't have any problem at all.

However, if I set the queue to use the same stored procedure, it gives me the following error:

Error 15274: Access to the remote server is denied because the current security context is not trusted.

Any ideas?

When trying to access the sql server database I am
receiving the following error:
An error 1069 - (This service did not start due to logon
failure) occurred while performing this service operation
on the MSSQLServer sevice.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!It looks like you may have changed the password for whatever
account is running SQL Server. You need to change the
password setting for the services if you change the password
for the account.

I have an Access front-end connected to a SQL Server database. A report that
used to work fine still opens fine in Preview mode, but when you go to print,
after a long delay it finally generates the error:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 10060
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen
{PreLoginHandshake()}.
Connection Failed:
SQL State: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 11
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]General network error.Check
your network documentation.
and hangs up the server (the users have been restarting it to get back up
and running).
Would appreciate any ideas to help me resolve this. I have copied the
database and app to another system and did not have any problems there, so I
suspect the problem is with SQL Server on the first system.

Because the issue does not occur when previewing, it seems to be related to
printer driver. I suggest that you use the printer "Microsoft Office
document image writer" as default printer. Does the issue occurs at this
time?
Also, please install the latest MDAC 2.8 sp1 on the cleint to test the
sitaution.
If you copy the database to a different client, can you reproduce the
issue? Have a great day!

numerous other reports that don't lock up SQL Server. If I use the image
writer as my default printer, won't that just create a file on disk -- that
isn't a viable solution.
I cannot reproduce the error on another server, though it happens fairly
consistently from all the clients on the problem server.

I'd like to explain the suggestions I provided is just to narrow down the
issue, other than a permanet solution. If the "Microsoft Office document
image writer" works. We shall take some actions to reolve the printer
driver or related issue on this machine. Or, we shall find other possible
cause.
To check if the issue is relate to user profile, I suggest that you create
a new user on this machine with admin rights and log on as this new user to
test the situation.

printer driver. I suggest that you use the printer "Microsoft Office
document image writer" as default printer. Does the issue occurs at this
time?
Also, please install the latest MDAC 2.8 sp1 on the cleint to test the
sitaution.
If you copy the database to a different client, can you reproduce the

numerous other reports that don't lock up SQL Server. If I use the image
writer as my default printer, won't that just create a file on disk -- that
isn't a viable solution.
I cannot reproduce the error on another server, though it happens fairly
consistently from all the clients on the problem server.

I'd like to explain the suggestions I provided is just to narrow down the
issue, other than a permanet solution. If the "Microsoft Office document
image writer" works. We shall take some actions to reolve the printer
driver or related issue on this machine. Or, we shall find other possible
cause.
To check if the issue is relate to user profile, I suggest that you create
a new user on this machine with admin rights and log on as this new user to
test the situation.

Error 0xc0202009 for importing access97 into sql

We have an Access97 database with 122 tables. I try to use import and export wizard to import the data from access into SQL 2005 database. I find an interesting problem. When select all tables, the wizard give following errors:

Pre-execute (Error)
Messages
Error 0xc0202009: {DBD1EAB5-7865-4B89-A7BB-DDC8507D8119}: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft JET Database Engine" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Unspecified error".

Error 0xc020801c: Data Flow Task: The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "SourceConnectionOLEDB" failed with error code 0xC0202009.

But if I divide importing as 2 steps:
1. import all tables before PlanClasses, it works.
2. import all tables after PlanClasses including PlanClasses, it works.

If I just import PlanClasses itself, it works, but I can not import all tables at once. Interesting thing is if I just unselect PlanClasses, it will have same error at the class right after PlanClasses. Is there size limitation when doing import at once?

Yes, unfortunately the wizard does not scale too well when you transfer many tables at once. It generates a single data flow task with as many sources and destinations as is the number of transferred tables. That makes such packages exhaust resources when the number of tables grows.

We have an optimization in place, which builds simple data flows on the fly for each table, but that only works for SQL Server to SQL Server transfers.

generally get to know them.

Ok, I found the error. Somebody activated a second NIC on the server and
that mangled the network routes. The server that was being requested was not
available by pinging. That is way the error was raising on the "send"
method.

Error : SQL server does not exist or access denied.
We are replacing the box the SQL server resides on and we have set up the
new server as a copy of the old one. It is a Win2000server with DNS and
active directory.
SQL server ver 8.00.760
We are able to:
Attach to the new server from workstations including exploring and
mapping the drives (actually our old server mappings worked)
We can establish an ODBC connection to the SQL server from the new box
and it tests fine so the server is started and running.
We were able to get one workstation to access the SQL server after
enabling name pipes but another still could not.
We are able to connect to the old DNS server and SQL server from all
workstations with no difficlties. Only one of the servers is connected at at
ime.
We can not set up an ODBC connection from any other workstation attached to
the new server. This is the error message we receive:
Connection failed:
SQL State 01000
SQL Server error: 10060
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server driver[tcp/ip sockets] Connectionopen (Connect
()).
Connection failed:
SQL State 08001
SQL Server error 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server driver[tcp/ip sockets] SQL Server does not exist
or access denied.
There is no firewall in between the server and workstations (a fire wall
resides between the server and the internet with NAT enabled).
Login is set to use both windows and SQL authentication. We have tried it
as SQL only login with the same error message.
We have worked through Microsoft document 328306 "Potential causes of the
"SQL Server does not exist or access denied" error message"
Any ideas where our problem is?

We are replacing the box the SQL server resides on and we have set up the
new server as a copy of the old one. It is a Win2000server with DNS and
active directory.

I've got a small issue - I can't access my report server anymore!
Everything was working beatifully, up until we restarted the server
last night.

The problem related to security permission.
As it is set up for internal use only, we made the following change to
fix the problem.
In services, World Wide Web Publushing - added permisssion to allow
serice to interact with desktop.

read data off a CD and import it to the system -- this function works on all
computers except one. On the problematic machine, I keep getting Error 8152

DoCmd.RunSQL "UPDATE [Table1] SET [Pub Date] = SUBSTRING([Pub Date], 1, 2) +
'/01/' + SUBSTRING([Pub Date], 3, 4)"
What is happening here is that a number of date fields come into the system
in mm/yyyy format. This causes some problems, so I loaded them into a temp
table as a string, and am inserting 01 for the day in the middle. Once that'

data. As I said, this all works for every computer but one. The machine in
question has all the correct Access references, and the user is a member of

The date format you are using is not a portable format. For a date-only
value, you should use:
YYYYMMDD

type varchar. I handle the date conversion later. Also, the code works just
fine on all the computers except one.
I did some more investigating and discovered that when I try to load data
using the problem computer, the system creates and saves copies of the temp
tables I use for data import and manipulation. All other users re-use the
previously defined tables. The new user-specific temp tables default to data
type nvarchar, rather than varchar. When I switched the appropriate fields
from nvarchar to varchar the code worked fine. Go figure.

Erroneous EOF's from Simple Queries

I am testing a VB.NET application using SQL Server Express (2005) and
ADODB.
Multiple instances of the application all access the database. In some
cases, they access and try to update the same row of a table. I am
opening this table with a single row query and
ADODB.LockTypeEnum.adLockPessimistic which I understand to be
equivalent to ROWLOCK.
Sample query:
SELECT Semaphores.* FROM Semaphores WHERE
(((Semaphores.SemaphoreName)='MySem'));
PROBLEM:
This query should always return the one record where this condition is
true. Most of the time it does this. However, sometimes it opens
without error, but the EOF condition is true (even though the query
should return the existing record).
My assumption was that the adLockPessimistic would fail the Open with
an exception if the the row could not be accessed with the lock. Is it
possible I am instead getting an EOF in this case? If not, any ideas
what may cause an EOF on a query that works almost every other time?
Other settings:
m_Connection.CommandTimeout = 5
m_Connection.ConnectionTimeout = 15
SET LOCK_TIMEOUT 0
Note:
Since I know the record is there, I could technically loop on the
erroneous EOF to get around the problem. But I believe I am seeing it
occur in other places where I cannot guarantee the EOF is not valid.

Ditch ADODB, use SqlClient, and read the BOL for lock hints and OUTPUT
clause.
No one remembers details of exactly ADO works, and no one wants to figure it
out. But plenty of people here can help with pure SQL solutions.
So what are you trying to acomplish? What are the table structures (DDL
please), and desired results?

I am getting an error whle I try to import an Access DB into a MSSQL DB.
Insert Error, ('DATEBIRTH', DBTYPE_DBTIMESTAMP), status 6; Data
Overflow. Invalid character value for cast specification.
Now, during the DTS wizard I tried changing the types to smalldate, or
just plain text but neither work.
any thoughts?

Usually this is caused by incorrect data. You may want to load into a
staging table and make the date column char or validate the data before
loading.

It may highlight a deficiency in the current application, therefore any
clean up operation would have to be repeated each time you loaded your
SQL server database. Finding out why you have poor data would be
necessary to ensure a smoother transfer in the future. If you loaded
into staging tables your clean-up code could be used when transforming
that data into the live tables, this would mean you are not depending
on the current data source.
100K records is not actually that many, hopefully not all of them are
duff!!
